It may shock you, but on an industrial scale, electricity is rarely generated in reserve. If fuel or water power is used to generate energy, then the process can be regulated and not generate excess electricity. But there is a problem with renewable energy sources. You can’t tell the sun “to shine later” and the wind “to blow in the evening”.  How to save renewable energy and give it to consumers during peak hours? Scientists are working on various options. We have already discussed one of them – sand batteries. The alternative is gravity batteries. How long can they work and how much electricity can they give out? And most importantly, can they change the world of renewable energy? Find out in today’s video!

  1. In my opinion, you could set a bunch of these large scale gravity batteries around the place on pieces of otherwise worthless land, and use them to stabilize the electrical grid. If there is too much solar power coming in, just send the excess to the gravity battery and when the weather is bad, use the gravity batteries to top the power up. There is plenty of 'worthless' land in Australia that would be perfect.

  2. People saying hydro don't realize that certain tech is dependent upon resource. They're using this method obviously because hydro is being used for other things or it is too costly to route it there. Same with minerals… they might not have the necessary minerals available or are using it for other things.

  3. Please do the math!
This way will never be cheaper than a regular battery.

the math is done multiple times below…

    For better understanding:
    A regular car battery (lead):
good to recycle, cost like 50-100 per kWh (delivered to your home!)

    the gravity battery:
    10 t lifted 20 m

both have the roughly the same capacity….

Does all the stuff you need to build sth like that sound better than the lead battery?
cost wise… space wise …. security wise … what ever wise, you name it.
water is great for that, because water is free (comes as rain from above). and you "only" have to build the wall(s)
thats why it is so broadly used.

  4. Sodium ion batteries are in production which will proliferate over ten years. A little more massive than the fancy ones for cars, trucks and aircraft, they are made of cheap table salt, so won't run out. If you have half a cake and I have two times less cake? Well one times less, is no cake at all.

  5. Or use rock or building to pressure water turbine hydraulic motor generator. Cheapest is to allign the permanent magnet so that the motor include inside generator so need no building construction at all

  6. It is ok if slowly build up and slowly release to low voltage parallel batteries the distribute high current. .lift water so more control and spectrum of charge and release

  7. Why not use the the ocean, locks and gates, and mine shafts? This a load that is heavy, but is also able to float? When the water is released the load moves down the shaft as the water is released. There are two forms of gravitational energy to capture instead of just one. This would maximize the energy produced and create a cycle that has more output energy than energy used to produce it. This model would use. Weight, air for lift, water plus gravity.
