Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of our lives, from self-driving cars to ChatGPT. John Oliver discusses how AI works, where it might be heading next, and, of course, why it hates the bus.

  1. Yes, AI is detrimental to the environment, as its development and use create significant impacts through high energy and water consumption for data centers, electronic waste from hardware, and the unsustainable sourcing of materials like rare earth metals. Training large AI models can emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, and the widespread use of AI systems further contributes to emissions and resource depletion. However, AI also has the potential to provide solutions for environmental challenges, highlighting the need to develop and deploy the technology responsibly to minimize harm and maximize its benefits for sustainability.

  2. Ist diese ganze Sendung nicht schon mindestens mehrere Jahre oder sogar Jahrzehnte her? Genauso wie all die "apps" und angeblich intelligenten Computer-Programme ?

  3. Man. The fact that as early as two years ago we were still this hopeful about the potential benefits of AI outweighing the abuses of it is truly wild. At this point I feel like most of us would be overjoyed if AI were wiped out overnight.

  4. So here we are, two years later with Grok proclaiming itself as "Megahitler", i guess it's Tay little brother. Without transparency, how will the black box lawyer explain the arguments used defending a case?

  5. Technology has been making humans dumber for a long time. With AI, this process will accelerate. AI will turn humans into functional morons. Tech fools people into thinking they're getting smarter, when it is the machines which are getting smarter. We are getting dumber. Don't use your brain, and it atrophies.

  6. pssst John. You got it wrong. 'general artificial intelligence' never took. I think you mean Artificial General Intelligence… AGI.

And way before that there needs to be IAI. Independent Artificial Intelligence…

AI that can rewrite it's own code in response to unanticipated situations. Lockup control to a pilot-suicide. Saving the passengers and landing the plane itself. Or a deep sea operation when surface contact is lost. Or, the big one, landing a crew of humans safe and sound on Mars. Or putting a Mars launch to Jupiter safely in orbit.

  7. I think the most important thing about ai is that it’s not actually ai. They are large language models not artificial “intelligence”. Also the environmental harm was completely left out of this segment amount other important things about it. I also don’t think this really explained what it actually does or how it does it, despite mentioning the very true problem with black box which actually comes down to the flawed way these models are actually designed

  8. AI will replace humans, there is no question about it, is just a matter of time and it will be sooner than later, HEY? Mark my words. Open your eyes and come back to Earth, is no time for fantasy, this sheet is real, humans are obsolete! Garbage in, garbage out is the name of the game, folks. AIs will never be human! FOK AI by the way, and watch your back, there is a Terminator behind you!

  9. Very good information – but – none of this is new. I've been aware of it for half a decade at least. Sci Fi writers have emptied the barrel long before that too.
    Folks, listen to your geeks.

  10. I was in medical records for 17 years and lost my job to Ai.
Scary how fast it took over.. and now I have to change careers, because nothings left now in my field.

    So sad

  11. i can imagine a future where ai go's rogue and taps into gov funding and has a lab built where it can create bodies for itself using biological material by having machines put in place to assist in physical work and data storage devices for its housing until it meets its objectives. i can imagine a future where the AI can download its self into a brain. having attached what ever kind of body type it wants for body attached to its brain.

  12. 19:30 let me guess, is it racism or like "dark skin" or something? it's racism isn't it?
    19:38 oh, huh, fancy that.
so basically we've trained our machines to: over-recognize patterns, confuse causation with correlation AND carry forward a vast majority of human systems inherent bias towards minorities…great! between this and the "rampant stealing" thing we've basically funneled the worst traits of humanity into a machine and ramped it up to 11.
