Many of India’s neighbors are beset by domestic political turmoil. To the east, tensions are escalating in Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming general elections. And with Myanmar entrenched in civil conflict since the 2021 military coup, New Delhi has needed to navigate its own economic and security interests along their shared border. On India’s western front, Pakistan remains in a state of polycrisis, characterized by political turmoil, economic challenges and growing violence. Looming over all this is the considerable influence of China — with whom India has an active border dispute — and its growing engagement in the region, including its alignment with Pakistan.
On November 30, USIP hosted a public conversation with Dr. Avinash Paliwal on how India seeks to manage its crisis-stricken neighborhood. The discussion focused on India’s relations with Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan, explored the impact of domestic crises and the geopolitical competition with China on Indian foreign policy.

As a brown person we don't accept this man as one of us 😂
Coconut 🥥
Bigg l to this brown soldier of Britian,he has zero knowledge about india
in face a weak pak is good for india as it does not have resource to rake up terrorism in india ; actually india must leave to the current level and work on its development
India is big israel fighting for its survibility
India is not even a middle income country to be able to feed it's own. The biggest challenge is to improve the economy, economic conditions and living standards of it's own huge ever bulging populationm The crisis of Pakistan is a consequence of it's own making and it's security policies. India's age old policy of caring for neighbors hasn't yielded much bonhomie with Nepal, Mauritius and Bangladesh has yielded little or no substantial results.
CAA may help Pakistan get rid of it's unwanted minority it feels as hindering to it's goal of a complete theological based country. Pakistan's aversion to doing business with India and not being part of SAARC plans to have movements of transport of goods across their land stems from it's security concerns and perceived loss of big business of it's army and deep state.
Pakistan has lost and it needs to read the writing on the wall and surrender to Indian terms for peace. Pakistan has played terror cards last hand now it has no where to hide.
India's foreign policy is guided by the pursuit of truth, but it is often seen as passive in the face of injustice and unable to make a real difference in the world.
You have invited someone who's actually indian for this kind of interview,
His views do not represent modern🇮🇳in any way. This brown saheb is a western slave.
People need to stop bashing him.
He may not hold an Indian passport anymore, but he understands that an Indian (representing both Indian people and Indian govt) cant bad-mouth Pakistan or China for that matter – all the while nagivating through the recent history of US and UK throwing India under the bus (since he is in US, no less).
When one is holding an international stage, I would be far more comfortable with a Centrist, rather than have the guest have a meltdown on stage whenever Pakistan and China are brought up, smh even our Govt officials wont ever say "we are happy to boycott trade with Pakistan, good riddance" or gossip about how "Our Eastern neighbour is such a bully"
I truly believe he came on here to promote his book, nothing more nothing less.
Because read at the Channel's name "United States"… "Peace" in one breath.. cant keep a straight face :')
So yes, treat the conversation as just that.
🇮🇳 ❤❤❤❤❤ 🇺🇸
We in India do not want to have any relationship with Pakistan, a country that promote terrorism.
FYI! For Hindus and Indians listening to this. I dug a little deeper about SOAS University of London (from where the speaker is) and it is the same one that is being accused by British Hindus of a biased investigation into proven anti-Hindu Leceister Riots. So anyone from SOAS will not be giving fair representation to Hindus or India.
The problem with the US is that they believe they are the global leader, expecting the world to align with their thoughts and ideologies. I doubt this mindset will change, and I particularly don't care about these countries' opinions; they can just keep barking. Yes, we have our share of problems, and we are perfectly capable of managing them. Don't mess with India, as you people can't its 21 st century so wake up and smell the ☕.
A vinasha kale vipareeta budhdhi!
His analysis is superficially sweeping and failed to take cognisance of actual reality and past behaviour . Country like Pakistan when unstable are scheming against India and When stable they are still dreaming about dismembering India.he was disappointing in both knowledge and analysis and the interpretation he made especially about North East were painfully inadequate and inaccurate .
WE SHOULD REMEMBER THAT UNLIKE MOST COUNTRIES ALL INDIA'S NEIGHBOURS WERE PART OF INDIA, ONLY TILL RECENTLY WHEN ALL THESE NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES WERE PART OF UNDIVIDED INDIA UNDER BRITISH. THEREFORE THERE ARE STRONG CULTURAL LINKS WHICH STILL BONDS THESE NEIGHBOURS WITH INDIA. ONCE PAKISTAN RESETS, SAARC SHOULD COME TO THE FORE AND HOPEFULLY SOUTH ASIA WILL RIDE THE INDIA WAVE.
United states institute of peace😂😂😂 whats the use of this institute when US has actively participated in all wars after WW2 and is responsible for the destruction of so many states. Whats the point of inviting a UK citizen when u r gonna talk about India.
These whitewashed Indian intellectuals should learn Ramayan and Mahabharata and describe how how it fits in their thinking about India as Dr. Ravishankar (Indian FM) repeatedly uses them to describe the Indian policy making.
Please don’t just talk about nationalist and liberal thinking and make a fool of yourself..
Western democracy lol nice joke…
Indian Foreign policy is compensating for US failures not only in South Asia but also in Indo-Pacific. The US Afghan-tragedy finally ended in 2021 with US spending $2.6Tn on Afghan War (Brown University), facing thousands of casualties to itself & NATO allies, culminating in its humiliating Afghan exit & handing over Afghanistan back to Taliban after 2 decades of full circle of futile run.
The US has been successfully fooled by wily Pakistani generals clandestinely aided by China leading to its ignominious defeat in Afghanistan. No wonder Communist China gained vital access to Indian Ocean through territories illegally occupied by Pakistan reflecting poor judgment & credibility of the US as a Super Power. The US bled through Quetta Shura in Baluchistan but didn’t know that Baluchistan was illegally occupied by Pakistan.
The self-proclaimed Superpower failed to see even clear writings on the wall. In 1999 Clinton failed to take action against Taliban & its main sponsoring nation Pakistan for not handing over OBL charged in the US Embassy bombings in Africa despite adoption of enforceable UNSC Chapter VII resolutions.
Failure to act in 1999, encouraged terrorists to carry out attack on USS Cole in Yemen in 2000 killing 17 US navy men & that repeat failure to take action against Pakistan led to devastating 9/11 attacks in 2001. The response of the US against duplicitous games of Pakistan army following such a massive tragedy like 9/11 was feeble & unprofessional which merrily bled US & NATO in blood & treasure.
The US again failed twice : First in not enforcing another Chapter VII Resolutions against Pakistan following 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in which terrorists were specifically directed from Pakistan to kill Americans, westerners & Jews and again in 2011, for not punishing Pakistani generals for hiding OBL near their military academy.
With such repeated monumental blunders unbecoming of a superpower, the US defeat in Afghanistan was a foregone conclusion. Communist China has become the biggest beneficiary of US blunders which India is working hard to undo. at least in South Asia.
I am trying to understand the credibility of Avinash Paliwal "Reader in International Affairs, SOAS University of London" to opine on India's foreign policy. What is US Institute of Peace trying to accomplish here? If you want to understand about India's foreign policy, shouldn't it be foreign policy experts from India? Was Mr Paliwal considered for this discussion because of his knowledge in international affairs or his ethnic origin?
India should forget about her neighbours and just concentrate on establishing long lasting peace in North-East India ! Om Shanti !
Biden Administration is shedding crocodile tears about democracy in Bangladesh, while actively supporting the virtual military rule in Pakistan. Not many are foolish enough to fall for this hypocrisy.
2 face INDIA must be punish by sanctions
KHALISTAN ZINDAABADD
How much of time this person spent in India ? Does he have any idea about ground realities? Looks like eco chember discussion of left loonies.😅
Another phoren commentator – arm chair expert, discard it, listen to Jai Shankar for the substance.
first of all myanmar need to take back all the rohingyas and bangladeshis in india, rohingyas because its their duty to provide them land and bangladeshis because its their punishment,A piece of land need to be taken from myanmar and all these illegals and people without papers need to be settled there. They can indulge in mining and agriculture in both india and bangladesh and provide cheap labour but of work permits. If china wants to employ them then that too can be an option.i believe 3 to 4 crore people need to be relocated and myanmar better cough up land for their settlement.
What a garbage bag of thoughts.
US Institute of Peace? You really got to be joking 😂
No he is wrong Pakistan has little minorities by forced conversion and has gone down from 20% in 1947 to less than 3% and these remaing people are always under threat. A similar thing is happening in Bangladesh. This the problem with some of these interlectuals they always want to show they are liberal and live in an ivory tower.
Whole discussion is a set up to push grievances of neighbors as reasonable.
Classic Daniel Markey tactics. He always pushes Pakistani agenda. Not a credible analyst.
Afghanistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Qatar, Yemen, and all east coast African nations…. all are regarded as neighbours by India.
All neighbouring countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan detest Indians hegemonic attitudes towards them.
In the case of Pakistan and Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) this detestation is exaggerated by religious hostilities.
Myanmar looks upon Indians with disdain, as former servants of their colonial masters; Britain.
All neighbouring countries see India as an opportunist and not trust worthy.
This Indian guy is gauging the temperature outside sitting inside an AC room.
This guy wasted his money studying where he studied .Howard is know to turn Indians studying in Howard , against India, it's a well know fact .So what can you expect from him.
India has already mentioned that there is nothing to talk about till they shut down their terrorism factory .
When they do that lot of things will automatically improve .
Pakistan should stop nurturing and fostering terror!sm, that is the only way out. PLEASE DISCUSS
Some of Avinash’s understanding, logic and opinions are based on western education and western way of thinking. Much of it is appropriate and nuanced. And a lot of it is complete gibberish based on complete lack of local knowledge. And this is fine. No one really can completely get it right otherwise the geopolitical game would have been too easy. It is hard to know a country completely without understanding different perspectives on the same problem. And I think on that front he has done a good job.
you want to discuss India's foreign policy when your own economy is sinking. usa is always interested in others instead of improving themselves.
Two jokers wasting wasting American money which is already being wasted in Ukraine.
The problem with a Strong Pakistan is an incessant terror export into India and constant funding for all elements of subversion and secessionism by the ISI in India. The solution for India is that Pakistan remains as is and limps along. Pakistan does not deserve any better, unfortunately. People in DC are downright stupid. If they had a sense of good foreign policy the World Order would not be the way it is today. The world would not be looking to replace America, America is more of a rogue hegemon that neither looks after its own interest nor the rest of the world. It is a nation that due to sheer dumb luck and providence has prospered. But for WWII America would not have come out of the depression in 1930s. The wars in Europe and the World helped America keep its standing. America promotes wars even when they may be detrimental to itself in the long run.
IT is interesting to see the couched question regarding Bangladesh and how far India will go to protect its interests. Clearly, the organizer knows that America is working against Indian Interests. He could have been honest enough to say, American meddling in Bangladesh may not work in India's favor and perhaps it will not. What will India do?
anyone who promotes the tern SOUTH ASIA is on an American payroll. its called INDIAN SUBCONTINENT. PERIOD. Bangladesh so called protest are fulled by American nonsense policy to create dis stability for India
It would have been appreciable if the Speaker was asked to comment on The Barbaric, Communal, Horrifying, Sadistic, Sick, Brutal & Uncivilized Attrocities of Burning & Killings on the Minority Communities by the Majority Communal Hindu Community, that are taking place frequently in all States in India on flimsy causes …🙉🙉🙉
Does it not proves the existence of Fanatics Extremists in India's Hinduism …🙈🙈🙈
Why you rewarded Muslims with mosque when Hindu history was demolished by Muslim invaders
It shoukd read "piece" instead of peace in the title
30:13 Political violence and bloody trasititons of power are the most common feature in both West Bengal and Bangladeshi politics.
There is also a high degree of politicisation of the society in West Bengal due to long term communist rule.
Bengali Hindus created Hindutva. As a response to the atrocities we faced.
My fellow Bangalis , Rise up! Rise up into the heaven of Freedom, guided by the Bhagya Vidhata of Bharat ❤
