New York City has launched the first congestion pricing plan in the U.S, charging drivers entering parts of Manhattan during peak hours.
The program aims to reduce traffic and raise $15 billion in upgrades to the city’s subway and commuter rail system.
We hear Canadian reaction on whether such a plan could work here, especially in a city famous for it’s own traffic challenges.
Global’s Lexy Benedict reports.

So far this is working in NYC with less traffic and gridlock, it could work in toronto and encourage people to
Use public transit.
Lol, GTA has no transportation. What are you encouraging people to? Walking?
Guess who let too many people into Canada, SMFH
$9.00 a working day is about $2,200 a year extra tax on people who are already struggling to make ends meet and raise a family.
Uhm……so canadians pay $2 per day just to breathe as it is, pay gas tax when car is purchased and now charge more money…..because that is going to make things better for anything except more money in government pockets
Newyork gets to experience a carbon tax like thing
Just watch less than a week pepole will compalin who live in tht area.. cause food etc abotu to sky rocket.
NO
Get rid of the Bike Lanes. Organize construction work. Ban e-bikes.
Price of the food will increase
NWO trash news
Remember when Miller proposed transit city and then RFord took it away… What a waste of money and resources to fast forward to today's society where transit is being pushed up the ying yang and still places on the outskirts like Scarborough really need better transit don't have it while extension to Vaughan and Finch where most folks with money don't use it… Make it make sense…. This cater to the rich philosophy can only go for so long. When its the working class and lower suffering the most… Now I can see the wealth gap is much larger then before covid and only getting worse…. 1% has all the wealth …. And while we 99% get shafted…. Time for folks to really wake up and see the madness….
Scammmmmmmmmm
Hah Toronto mayor the traffic if slowing the economy the experts say and you there going to schools for this wow PEOPLE there are3 :4 way in and around but you chose the same one over and over I live in southern Ontario go through traffic in Toronto and then get off I DONT stay on GO AROUND
So instead of fixing traffic light cycles and stop adding too many traffic lights and actually enforcing king street rules properly we would be fine without this , of course this country just wants to keep charging more and more for this nonsense
Dont add stupid charges to already outrageously expensive city like Toronto.
Most of the congestion is due to road repairs and construction blockages anyways.
Yes in Toronto
NYC's transit is world class. A congestion toll in Toronto without an adequate transit replacement would simply be a punishment levied on the drivers who contribute to the city's economy and a cash grab by the city.
My parents spent 15$ every time they wanted to park downtown Toronto when they came to visit…. Anytime we went anywhere, boom minimum 10$.
1. If companies operated fine with people wouod from home in 2020/2022/2022 then they should stick to that. Some positions literally make no sense commuting to an office.
2. Construction companies should get ONE job at a time and not more until its completed (and a good job, some of the paving jobs will have you end up needing a suspension).
3. Stop giving bad drivers a license!!!
4. Transport trucks should have their own lane
5. Stop immigration to just one province or at all for 5 minutes
6. Go after the dealerships & their customer that allow bogus sales to car thieves that stage write offs & theft especially in Brampton
7. Uber drivers- do we really beed uber drivers 2 minutes away at all times??
8. Why must houses/ condos be built on top of eachothrr. Whats with the no parking anywhere or space in between?
Dont be fooled about this problem. The "experts" ,city plannes and gov officials, construction companies all knew it was coming (ironic how they all have deep pockets) Everything is by design and Canadians will bend over & take it
We need toll roads in every downtown neighborhood
We will have tolls everywhere eventually.
Then tolls per person, CO2 fees. Same for pets.
Politicians love to tax the people and waste $.
How about getting rid of the stupid giant streetcars that block 2 entire lanes of traffic when they make a right turn? Improve the subways. Residence and contractors of the city need to use the streets and paying a toll would be ridiculous.
Was murderer terry mclintoc released yet? In 2018 your report said that they were scheduled to parole in 2024 and durham area where she and rafferty came from just had more homocides so did they get released yet? Please warn public about if they are released to warn public due to setious risk for harm to children same with if karla or paul bernardo is released please warn public if serial killers are released cause more murders happened in hanover and durham area where the serial killers lived mclintoc comes from durham so did she return is shebconnected to recent murders durham ?
Can't compare New York City to Toronto 😂 New York City has the best public transportation system in North America. You can get from point A to point B using the Metro or the Long Island Railway or the New Jersey Transit Railway in no time… Toronto transit is slow, inconvenient and expensive. It takes forever to get anywhere. Also charging people money to drive on roads that have already been paid by taxpayers is just a cash grab… Don't penalize people because Toronto has a crap transit and infrastructure system. Fire the monkeys doing the city planning and hire people with proven experience and positive results.
Yes, let’s make it harder for less wealthy people to get to work and feed their families. Thank you Mr. Expert for your wonderful ideas.
Its a TRAP. MORE CONTROLL FROM BIG BROTHER😉
How much water can you squeeze out of that stone?
This would literally be the dumbest thing you could do. If you want to increase ridership on Toronto transit maybe lowering the price or making it free would make it more appealing? Obviously you wouldn’t do that because the city couldn’t afford it. Well people can hardly afford groceries, now you want to charge them a toll to get their groceries?!?
Just face the reality of things. Toronto is an old and far too developed city. The original roads and streets were never designed to accommodate the 3 million people who live there let alone the nearly half a million commuters on the 401 through Toronto and the average of around 2 million additional cars per week traveling through the city. Even if it was entirely done using mass transit and eliminating cars the city couldn’t accommodate it.
It truly wouldn’t surprise me to hear that Toronto sees 30 million people commuting on and through their city streets in a month. You can’t fix that without tearing things down and redesigning the city around a mixed transportation set up that both meets the current needs of the city well also facilitating the possibility of future expansion. But that’s an impossibility.
Toronto is already one of the worst places to go in Ontario. Now you want to make it unaffordable to even visit let also live there. What a joke.
Toronto's transit system is 3rd world compared to NY and 50 years behind, So no! It won't work.
This works in cities with robust transportation systems and subway systems that service commuter areas. We are not set up like London or New York.
Look at Europe. Get trains and streetcars!
Wasn’t there a time when the idea of doing the same for Vancouver was put out there?
Make taking the go train more affordable for a daily commuter. That's the only way I could see this being an option. I'm not talking single digit price decreases. Remove taxes and decrease fares.
Why are city politicians getting so stupid?
There are other priorities like the homeless and people having to use food banks.
Toronto’s mayor and councillors should all resign!
This is nonsense. As a construction guy who lives North of Toronto, how am I supposed to carry the tools to work? Plus there is not that much traffic at 6 am? There are no buses or trains anywhere near my house.
