India has registered protest against China’s recent announcement of setting up two new counties, parts of which fall under the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on January 3, 2025.
Last week, Chinese state media had reported the government of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region announced the establishment of two new counties in the region – He’an County, and Hekang County. New Delhi has lodged protest with Beijing via diplomatic channels, and has condemned what it calls an “illegal Chinese occupation of Indian territory”.
