Southeast Asia is home to a wide range of ethnolinguistic groups that extend across a vast territory. Spread interchangeably are forests, mountains, valleys, rivers, deltas, coastlines, islands and archipelagos. With such a divergent environment, the nations of Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and the Philippines, have distinctly different identities, beliefs and geopolitical needs.

  1. Too bad the region has been blighted, held back and oppressed by that most violent of religions.
    Most anti-democratic of religions.
A very misogynistic and homophobic religion.
    Most anti-science religion!

    Well done, Philippines!

  2. in someways ASEAN has alot in common with the EU regarding their respective geopolitical positions.
(despite the very different history and also still developmental state)
both are a assembly of medium sized powers who need to form a identity and unity if they want to remain / gain independence from the worlds real superpowers (today china and US).

while many people in asia still see mainly their colonial history when they look at european countries they should instead look at the role of europe and its very divided status allways at the brink of catastrophe during the cold war era when europe was at the centre of the dominant geopolitical powers of that time.
europe wont be the centre point of the next big conflict but southeast asia

  3. US are such fkn hypocrites, they wanna blockade n instigate China just like they did w nato n Ukraine against Russia, but dare give them their own medicine n they will use propaganda to make the Americans believe it’s an act of war n throw a big fit over it

  4. CCP is working to control south and southeast Asia by controlling the water of Tibet and trade of Indian and pacific ocean and beyond since the invasion of Tibet. All countries should cooperate on security and develop together like EU and join QUAD-Asian NATO against Chinese ambition to reduce defense budget. Myanmar Laos Nepal Laos Cambodia etc all are already taken over by China.

  5. Malaysia is BESET with separatist groups? Chinese investments are selective done to WEDGE Malaysian territories against Kuala Lumpur?

Where on Earth did Caspian Report all of these from? 😂

While Malaysia isn’t perfect, Caspian Report’s “concerns” about Malaysia isn’t validated at all.

If they are validated, I challenge Caspian report to provide sources to their claims above about Malaysia. If not, it’ll only remain as hearsays.

  6. 21:53 It's kinda wrong to say Indonesia has absolutely no singular identity. While it's a relic of the more authoritarian past (in the sense it was the main contributor to its proliferation), Indonesian national language, Bahasa Indonesia, has went beyond lingua franca to become a sort of national identity of Indonesia. In domain of language alone, Indonesia is unique among post-colonial nations, to have succeed at promoting a minority (few %native) indigenous language (not javanese) as its national language (Paauw, 2009).

Some people is surprised that Indonesia, while still being a pluralist democracy, with thousand (recognized) of different ethnic groups, still manage to keep its humongous territory away from disintegration. I think this national integrity, by default should have collapsed post 1998 reformation. But because of Suharto's effort at promoting the language ALONG with education among the populace (relatively high literacy rate at the time), the people feel united enough not to disintegrate away, at least after some concession in decentralization (otonomi daerah).

  7. Papua New Guinea needs included.
If Indonesian Papua is, then P. New Guinea should be. It's often lumped in with Oceania, but that's kinda silly. A nearly straight line doesn't divide the island in reality. I know the biogeography of the island is separate from that to the east of the farthest west Wallace Line, but in terms of politics, P. New Guinea is not Australian. It's S. E. Asian.

  8. Malaysia is very important in the ASEAN region. Investors should realize this and take opportunities to invest. Washington should also engage more with Kuala Lumpur and ensure that Malaysia will never fall to China grasp.

  9. some one NEEDS to tell me the software or 3d render we are looking at @ 1:28 WHAT AN AMAZING GRAPHIC – it has 3d landscapes with light data – roads – labels… PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE SUGGESTIONS

  10. Certain “Countries” have no business existing when they are so small. Just integrate them into the bigger countries. But this should have been done sooooooo long ago to avoid the problems of today…

  11. Indochina was a product of French colonialism in the 18th century (Cambodia+Laos+Vietnam) even though this term is popularly used to describe the southeast asian region; both India & China thought this regions were an extension of their own lands, although underdeveloped and clearly without a social system – in the past many referred to mainland Southeast Asia as NANYANG (the Chinese), FURTHER INDIA (British empire) or even ASIA OF THE MONSOONS
