After weeks pledging it wouldn’t get involved, Canada’s federal government has moved to end a weeks-long strike at Canada Post. Canada’s labour minister said Friday he would not order binding arbitration right away but has begun a process that could force workers back on the job as early as next week. Heidi Petracek explains.

Canadian airline passengers are not on board with recent changes to carry-on baggage fees. And on Friday, the CEOs of Canada’s four largest airlines testified before a parliamentary committee on the topic. Nathaniel Dove reports.

The first Friday prayers were held in Syria today since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. The country’s interim prime minister praising what he called “the birth of a nation.” But the country’s future is still uncertain and Syrians are figuring out what that means for their own lives. Redmond Shannon explains.

And finally, Premiers are set to meet in Toronto next week, with one central issue on the agenda – Donald Trump’s tariff threat. Next week’s fall economic statement is expected to set out Ottawa’s response to Trump’s demand, including tighter border security. Mike Armstrong reports on the strategies at play.

  1. Its so greasy at the top of that Union. Only just to look at .greasy. those union leaders should be background checks. I would bet they didn't have post secondary. Probably not even high diplomas.

  2. CANADA POST UNDER HARPER FROZE WAGES FOR 10 YEARS AND TOOK AWAY HALF THE BENEFITS. THE DRIVERS AT UPS AND FEDEX NOW MAKE MORE MONEY THAN THE DRIVERS AT CANADA POST. AND THE PRICES OF FOOD AND HOUSING HAVE GONE THROUGH THE ROOF. POSTAL WORKERS ARE JUST TRYING TO CATCH UP TO WHAT THEY LOST IN PREVIOUS YEARS. THE MANAGEMENT AT CANADA POST NEVER NEGOTIATE WITH THEIR UNION. THEY RELY ON THE GOVERNMENT TO LEGISLATE THE WORKERS BACK TO LEGALLY STEAL THEIR PAY AND BENEFITS. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN THE GOVERNMENT ORDERS THE UNION BACK TO WORK THESE ISSUES NEVER GET ADDRESSED. ESPECIALLY HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES. WAGES AND BENEFITS. THE MANAGEMENT IS TO BLAME FOR $ 3 BILLION LOST IN THE LAST 6 YEARS. CANADA POST WASTES TO0 MUCH TAXPAYER MONEY. THE PUBLIC HAS NO IDEA. THEY ARE PROBABLY THE WORST MANAGED COMPANY IN THE WORLD. THE WORKERS ARE NOT TO BLAME. IN THE 1950'S AND 1960'S THE GOOD PAYING JOBS WITH COMPANY PENSIONS WERE IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR. THE PUBLIC SECTOR WAS ALWAYS LOWLY PAID BACK THEN. A FEW YEARS AGO THEY BOUGHT ALL THESE NEW STEP VANS THAT ARE TOO WIDE AND TOO LONG FOR THE ROADS IN DOWNTOWN TORONTO. I HEARD THEIR NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES ONLY HOLD LETTERS AND NOT PARCELS. AND THERE ARE LETTER CARRIERS DONE THEIR WALKS IN LESS THAN HALF A DAY WHILE OTHERS ARE OUT THERE INTO THE DARK. OR DRIVERS DRIVING AROUND WITH VERY LITTLE PARCELS FOR 8 HOURS PAY WHILE OTHER DRIVERS THEIR TRUCKS ARE FULLY LOADED. AND THIS IS BAD MANAGEMENT TO ALLOW THIS. THEY HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE NOT DOING ANY WORK. AND EVERYONE SEES THIS. CANADA POST HAS A MANAGEMENT PROBLEM AND NOT A WORKER PROBLEM. IT'S BEEN THIS WAY FOR YEARS. IT IS SYSTEMICALLY BROKEN. I SEE TRUMP WANTS TO PRIVATIZE THE US POST OFFICE. I COULD SEE THIS HAPPENING TO CANADA POST. IT IS BROKEN.

  3. This workers went on strike on purpose during the busy time, it's time for them to suck it up and go to work, I've worked for unions before and we never went on strike

  4. Singh didn't break any promises with the postal strike, and I'd wager he knew this was going to happen when he voted confidence 3 days earlier. Convince me differently, and cue the censorship in 5, 4, 3,…

  5. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡why

  6. Every company in the world should be forced by law to give employees a raise of 1% more than cost of living increases, every year without fail.

  7. Because of you I have a credit problem at the bank since I have not received a card that I have to pay and thanks to you and your unemployment it is affecting my economy.

  8. Tooooo Late, the Canada Post Grinch have stolen Christmas from the average Canadian who can’t afford the prices of other carriers not supporting them. They will now work to rule and nobody will get their packages/regular mail!!

  9. I was supposed to pay for a package I returned … now I know the cause of being lost( just a small example) Stop crying, that’s not the way Canada post, specially on Black Friday, Christmas ….. I Joe they receive penalties for the damages

  10. “Stay out of it. Don’t interfere. Don’t legislate these workers back to work. Don’t put in place 107 (binding arbitration). Let the workers negotiate a fair contract,” Singh told a scrum with media at the Delta Hotel, before heading to a rally at the nearby Canada Post building on Water Street.

“I want to also put this on record for Justin Trudeau: If you bring back-to-work legislation, even if it’s a confidence vote, I will be voting against it, my team will be voting against it, because we oppose back-to-work legislation, we’re always going to defend workers.”
