U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new trade deal with the European Union (EU) on Sunday, which sets a 15 per cent tariff on most European imports to the U.S. The Trump administration has failed to deliver on a promise of “90 deals in 90 days,” but several deals are being made ahead of the president’s Aug. 1 deadline. Touria Izri reports on the fine print of the EU deal and what it could mean for Canada.

Nova Scotia’s lobster harvesting season is now over, but that doesn’t mean that fisheries enforcement ends. In the past, there have been tensions and even violence between commercial fishers and Indigenous harvesters exercising treaty rights outside the season. Heidi Petracek shows us what enforcement looks like on the water – as those in the industry hope for calm seas ahead.

It’s been a long while since bison roamed the area where the city of Winnipeg now sits. But they’re back – in a way – as part of a public art exhibit. It’s raising money and awareness for children impacted by abuse. Melissa Ridgen explains.

  1. It seems to me that Carney could have undercut the states on their deal. That is to say find out where he is trying to make deals and we take that opportunity away from the US thus increasing our leverage and importance. Take the 1.5T EU deal. Carney has been talking about diversifying, even visiting the Europe before the US and we still didn't come out with a deal? Imagine had we made that 1.5T deal instead, or deal with Japan, Germany, South Korea, UK, Ireland, and many more. These are all missed opportunities. Why? Because of Net Zero of course. Carney is supposed to be a banker and a deal maker but can't make deals or money for Canada? Total Fraud.

  2. What it's telling me is that Trump is very serious about invading Canada and taking its resources (like Greenland). The geopolitical world has fundamentally changed. We have gone from a system of global agreements established after World War II (primarily for the benefit of the United States) to something much worse for Europe or Canada: the return of the world of empires where only raw power matters, the rest of the world becoming the vassal and/or victim of one of these empires. If now fascist U.S. decides to take Canada, who/what will prevent it? Who is so deluded as to think that the weak will have a say in this new world? Trump couldn't care less about Europe, only to crush it in order to avoid another competing power, but he very much cares about Canada and Greenland for obvious reasons.

  3. Eventually the US will get tired of their runaway inflation due to the tariffs Trump is making them pay (yes idiots, this is actually how it works) – then Trump will have to move on to his next Epstein distraction.

  4. Canada cannot substitute American trade for the EU, as 80% of trade and industrial investment comes from Uncle Sam! It’s only salvation is economic union with Sam..!

  5. US making billion dollar energy deals with Europe and Asia, Canada, more concerned with woke policies. We will become a 51st state sooner than you think. Thank your Liberal voter for that.

  6. Very disappointing to see EU cave to bullying tactics of Trump. At a moment in history when a new, fairer economic order could have been forged, the EU betrayed the rest of the world. It’s a dark day indeed. 🇨🇦

  7. It's a total disgrace! For 50 years in this EU, we've been told that we're stronger with 27 members… Today, once again, we have proof that this is not true!!! England, a nation of 70 million inhabitants (and therefore customers), has obtained a 10% tax from the US, while the EU, which has 450 million customers, is negotiating a 15% tax!!!!! Ursula Von Der Leyen sacrificed everything to save the German automotive industry!!!!! Ursula Von Der Leyen wasn't even elected by the citizens…she has no legitimate right to negotiate on our behalf!

What's more, those idiots in Brussels have once again committed to buying American military equipment, even though the Americans have been blackmailing us economically and militarily for over 50 years! So by buying this military equipment, we are going to become even more dependent! It's unbelievable. I wonder if the pseudo-leaders of this bloody EU have any brains at all!

The Americans have done everything they can to isolate us from Russia with their war in Ukraine, which they started… And our idiotic European leaders have rushed to obey them and rush headlong against our interests. They turned a blind eye to the destruction of Nord Stream 2 by the Americans, and now the EU is committing to buying $700 billion worth of fossil fuels from the US! This EU is completely crazy, it's tragic!

WE HAVE IDIOTS AT THE HELM OF THE EUROPEAN UNION !!!!!!

I WANT MY COUNTRY TO LEAVE THIS FARCE THAT IS THE EUROPEAN UNION!!!!!
    what a joke!

  8. In the absence of any action by our fearless leader, here is your strategy, fellow Canadians. 1) Stock up on non-perishables. Beans are especially good. 2) Sign up for your local food bank now. Avoid the rush that is coming. 3) Buy and extra pillow or two, to make sleeping in your car a bit more comfy. 3) Buy rabbit and gopher traps. Get 'em by the dozen. Then learn how to skin both. The gopher is a bit tough and gamey, but if you boil it long enough, it is no worse than shoe leather, and its consumption will at least let the kids sleep better at night.
You have no idea what is coming, do you? In the words of Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan: "When you gonna wake up?"

  9. Reading american commentators on many yt channels, we see that it is the americans that fear no deal with Canada. Here in the true north, we're at peace with no deal with the rapist. It's understood, it's accepted, we just turn the page and open a new chapter with non-fachist countries with the exception of China.

  10. The EPSTEIN ISLAND list is insurance and leverage that can’t be released until TRUMP has make all of his trade deals. Most of the world leaders that he has to make a deal with are on the EPSTEIN ISLAND LIST?
