There are 3 perfectly timed triggers for this week’s column: old, povertarian instincts are back; steel industry lobbying for more import duties; absence of reformers like AD Shroff. Watch this week’s #NationalInterest with ThePrint Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta.

27 thoughts on “India is backsliding on hard-won economic freedoms of 1991, with no reformers to protect them today”
  1. India can’t grow like China , it’s got its own pace , own politicians, own policies and world has stopped comparing India with China & we should stop comparing it too . The politicians are interested in staying in power through religious rifts and it’s not a surprise the FII’s started moving out as they found out that only business growing is online services .

  2. Indian stock market is sliding. This is based on geopolitical situation. All this is good Indian retailers and mutual funds are lapping up.This may continue for a year. India is equipping itself with infrastructure and upgrading technology. Great future ahead, wait and watch

  3. I dia us following a wrong economic model. Snd india should stop exporting its educated. Just lie the srupid Philippine exporting its people to the world as theu have a corrupt leader who libes his pockets at the expense if its peopke. Whar good is havibd CEO ouf indian irigin in US companies. They are either in consuner goids ir decrepit trch companies. Meanwhile Chinese are CEO of up and coming technology companies like Nvidia Broadcom etc

  4. It’s concerning to see economic freedoms that were hard-won being backslid. In such turbulent times, it might also be a good moment to rethink our priorities—perhaps by reconnecting with simpler, more sustainable ways of living closer to nature. Nature offers valuable lessons on balance and resilience, traits that could help shape a more sustainable economy moving forward. 🌿

  5. Respectfully sir, you have always been, shall always be an agent for the interests of the big business. Your single point agenda is to convince us that the interests of the big business are synonymous with the interests of the nation as a whole. This is an ideology, not a divinely ordained science as you would like us to believe. Shame on you and your propaganda.

  6. Try giving this American advice to the Americans who just voted in Trump who campaigned on promises precisely of the type you criticize. How times have changed – although not much is to be said of what the Modi govt is actually up to (we doubt they know themselves), Gupta himself seems to be stuck in a 1990s liberalization time-warp. Does the failure of Indian companies to innovate have to be blamed only on the government or are the industrialists/capitalists to bear at least some of the responsibility? What is stopping Adani from competing heavily on global markets? Why is he, and the Ambanis, simply intent on capturing the Indian market?

  7. History will be kinder to Manmohan Singh as he himself said. For welfarism to be sustainable, fairly high rate of broad based growth needed to happen. He achieved exactly that in most of the 10 years he was in power.
