Day 3 Overview:
Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam resumed the day for the visitors, and the pair comfortably negated the first hour of the morning session. Babar notched up his fifty in the first half of the session but right after the Drinks Break, Kwena Maphaka trapped the former Pakistani skipper for 58 runs, drawing the first blood for the hosts.
South Africa staged a solid comeback in the second half of the morning session. After dismissing Babar, they went on to remove Mohammad Rizwan (46) and Salman Agha (19), leaving the Men in Green in deep trouble.
The South African bowlers maintained their momentum and removed the remaining three wickets—Khurram Shahzad (14), Mir Hamza (13), and Aamir Jamal (15)—in quick succession, bundling Pakistan out for under 200 runs. It is worth noting that Saim Ayub was ruled out of this Test due to an ankle injury, leaving Pakistan with only nine wickets in their innings.
With a mammoth lead of 421 runs, South Africa enforced the follow-on against the Men in Green. Shan Masood and Babar Azam displayed immersed maturity and played good shots in the latter half of the second session.
The opening duo frustrated the South African bowling attack and scored at a decent pace as they went on to add 200-plus runs for the opening wicket, which is Pakisan’s highest opening stand against South Africa in Tests.
Skipper Masood brought up his century in the final hour of the day, but unfortunately, Babar once again failed to convert his impressive start into a century. Marco Jansen dismissed the former Pakistani skipper at the fag end of the day, leaving him 19 runs short of his ton.
The nightwatchman, Khurram Shahzad (8), safely negotiated the remaining overs of the day, while Masood remained unbeaten on 102. The skipper will look to convert his century into a marathon knock and help his side erase the follow-on deficit.
