How have we built our autonomous driving technology to navigate the world safely? It comes down to three easy steps: Sense, Solve, and Go. Using a combination of lidar, camera, radar, and compute, the Waymo Driver can visualize the world, calculate what others may do, and proceed smoothly and safely, day and night.

  1. I’m on vacation in Arizona with my dad, and we were driving to a few bookstores this afternoon. Then my dad pointed out a white car with a dome on top, and we saw two more as we were driving to more. And those cars had no one in the driver’s seat, because they were being driven by an AI.

I’ll be honest that even as someone who embraces the newest technology, I must say that this seems looks kind of weird (my grandparents agree), and I have no idea if I even want to ride in a self-driving taxi or a taxi driven by an actual person. In fact, the idea of a car driving all by itself looks kind of creepy (is there a ghost haunting the car?). I just hope there can still be human drivers.

  2. Just took a Waymo ride in Los Angeles. I was very impressed. It got around some tricky situations in an area with a lot of jaywalkers, and even reversed itself out of a way of a delivery truck trying to get through a narrow street.

  3. You guys make some pretty awesome keeping-everyone-in-the-neighborhood-awake devices when your cars are all honking at each other trying to park in a single lot at 4am.

Ever thought about going into the alarm clock business instead?

  4. I just visited LA for vacation and had the pleasure of experiencing riding in a Waymo. The ride is super smooth and seamless. Watching Waymo navigate the roads of LA basically in the Hollywood area I am convinced some time in the near future there will be more autonomous cars than drivers. It handles the normal scenarios of everyday driving better than most humans. I used Waymo as my rideshare for most of my destinations. The only downside I experienced was getting dropped off at a destination in the middle of nowhere. Not being from the LA area we input “Melrose Shopping District” as the destination. Unfortunately Waymo dropped us off on Melrose but no where near where we needed to be. We didn’t realize until after Waymo drove off. Unfortunately we had to pay another rideshare fare for an Uber with a live driver to take us where we needed to be. As far as safety, I would give it A+!

  5. I just had the experience of riding with Waymo in LA. It was a pretty cool experience! I felt perfectly safe and all I could think about was when were kids we talked about things that would be in the future… and here we are! Awesome experience!

  6. As a 17-year-old boy with Autism and "A mind like a trap or sponge" from what my parents tell me, this GREATLY piqued my curiosity, I've always had a curiosity in AI ever since ChatGPT came out, and have been studying its behavior ever since, but now that AI has been translated into Self-Driving cars, I can see this becoming extremely – and scarily – advanced that I wouldn't be surprised of human driven cars became a rarity in my lifetime. Would love to ride in one of these.

  7. will the future of the cabin of autonomous passanger cars like some kind of living room?the focus in waiting confort?without the elements of attending the drive?taking advantage of the interior frontal of todays car? gear shift?glove compartment space?.? no steering wheel? confronted seats? allowin face to face interaction?reclining seats?like a bed? a table in the center?in the seat? fridge?coffee?tv?..? would it helps to diferenciate todays human driver? gettin used to the aproach of autonomous car feeling? like today passanger area of limousine?pros? cons?better alternatives?

  8. I have seen Waymo in my city and I took some videos of it. Frankly it is incredible and much better than my Tesla FSD dare I say so. I have a video where it was blocked by a city bus and it blinked left and as it started to go left the bus moved ahead and it gave up and went behind the bus and turned right. It is exactly what a human would have done. I was super impressed. My Tesla FSD would have just beeped and had me take over after making some ridiculous move.

  9. No, No, and NO!
Not because the technology isn’t remarkable, but another tool to remove us from humanity will ultimately seal our fate. Go Outside, Talk To People, Work With YOUR Hands, and Take Risks.
