Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to demote former Finance Minister and deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has triggered a new round of speculation over his political future.

Canada is toast
I’m the smartest person in Canada, sorry Chrystia
I found your channel months after this video drop and just had this oldy wash up on the algorithmic beach.
Very interesting still, despite the subsequent twists, tariffs, tantrums, and turnarounds.
I was never a Trudeau guy as a Canadian, but he did have his moments. Some of them in his final days after announcing his intent to step down.
We ended up back in a liberal government, Freeland still on board, but with Carney coming to power. The jury is still out on exactly how good he will be, but he's intelligent enough, has a great economic background, and has the helm in hand. These are unsure international waters. But I'll bet on the banker over the orange wanker any day.
Peter, what do you say of Canada now that it has elected Liberals for the fourth time? Isn't it a diagnosis of sorts?
If she is so smart why did she destroy our country through incompetence? I doubt she can even do basic math , nevermind balance a budget

I do like how Zeihan ends the video, however. As he suggests, all that Canada has been dealing with in recent years is the second-order effects of its immigration program. But because of that immigration program, Canada has bought itself demographic time, on the order of 30 – 40 years.
Of course when Zeihan produced this video in December, Trump’s tariff war against Canada only loomed as a threat on the horizon. But overall Zeihan ends on a positive note about Canada, suggesting that it has been well-managed for at least 20 years by two governments, the Harper government, and the Freeland/Trudeau government.
Again, what Zeihan fails to understand is that civil servants in Ottawa already identified a falling fertility rate amongst native-born women as a looming demographic problem way back in the 1960s!!! Which is when Canada radically reformed its immigration program — in 1967 to be exact — and made it race, religion, and ethnicity-blind, and introduced the “points system”. A points system that Australia then copied almost verbatim in 1988, and that New Zealand copied as well in 1991. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Points-based_immigration_system .
Again, perhaps one could forgive a less prominent analyst who is not much interested in demography for this sort of oversight. But it’s virtually impossible to understand the current political economies of Britain’s former colonies like Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, without understanding how all of them adopted a points-based immigration system in the 20th century.
In any case, all of this should give one pause before taking Zeihan’s thoughts seriously with regard to just about anything and everything. Zeihan is “interesting”, but very, very far from infallible, and he does make some serious mistakes.
But at least Zeihan is intelligent, and at least he is trying to “think systematically”, and “think long-term”, which is something one rarely comes across in American commentators. He also seems to enjoy international travel, very much, and seems to recognise the importance of such travel in so far as it might mitigate his all-American centrist-Republican prejudices and blinkers.
All best wishes,
Laurence

As for Zeihan’s claim that there has been a 25-year “drought” with regard to having an “intelligent person at the helm”, gosh, is he ever wrong…..
Even though I personally didn’t like Steven Harper, he was not a stupid man, and has both a B.A. and an M.A. in Economics. Mulroney and Chretien were both lawyers, and again, although I didn’t like Mulroney, he was not a stupid man. And I personally think that Chretien was brilliant. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prime_ministers_of_Canada_by_academic_degrees .
Canada has a very, very long tradition of well-educated, intelligent leaders at the Federal level; something that the United States cannot say by comparison. At least given intellectually challenged Presidents such as Reagan, George Bush Junior, and Trump.
To be sure, no Canadian prime-minster since the 1970s can compare to Trudeau Senior, but then very few politicians can, in just about any modern western country. Trudeau Senior was an unusually imaginative, visionary politician who was also analytically brilliant, and politically Machiavellian. Both idealistic and dead realistic.
The only western equivalents in terms of raw intelligence and “political nous” would be certain German and French politicians. For instance, Brandt, Kohl, and Merkel in Germany, or De Gaulle, Mitterrand, and Macron in France. Both Kohl and Merkel had /have PhDs, and as near as I can tell Macron in France has 5 or 6 degrees, including an MA from Sciences Po in Public Affairs, and an MA in Philosophy from Nanterre. Also some kind of degree from ENA, the most “elite” of the Grandes Ecoles that prepare students for roles in business and government.
It looks like Trump has united Canadians as never before.
PS — perhaps Canada should build more housing now that USA has upped the tariff on lumber and aluminum
PS2— What’s dumb about this entire incident is that even if it goes back to zero on both sides of border, Canadians consumers may never go back to Wisconsin cheese or Kentucky bourbon whiskey after they’ve tried something else.
Whoa, 640,000 views. When you talk Canada listens, eh. Surprised there was no Freeland vs Carney video. What about a Pierre vs new liberal leader video?
Christina Freeland is worse than Trudeau and that's a hard task you are sooooo wrong on your assessment of her
How can a man so smart, say such stupid things? We saw what mass immigration brings! Immigration is not the answer! Brain boy!
Wow – 45 days later the Liberal party is about to be re-elected with a likely majority, and the the love for Trudeau – especially after his pushback against the fucking Americans, and history will remember him kindly.
The Airhead that beat Trump. Peter, you're wrong on this – again.
Unlike many of my compatriots, I think this is a keen, succinct, and precise analysis. Nobody gets everything right. I am left with the impression he does little research, and makes these as an impromptu presentation. Considering the breadth of topics covered, I'd say it's amazing.
saw a video with Freeland which revealed some background. for instance, she speaks Ukrainian & lived there when it was USSR.
There goes Peter and his click bait headline 🎉
Poilievre is a fashist…
Strong words from a former Canadian…
Jean Chretien Liberal Prime Minister 3 terms within the last 25 years
According to Peter Eigan, all nations are on the verge of collapse
Chrystia Freeland "is one of the smartest ppl in the world today"? Peter, pease! She sure as hell does not come access as such. Her condescending way of talking is insulting to the majority of educated Canadians that I know. These mensa type ppl over estimate their intelligence and get worse as they age and eventually get oost in their huberis! Oh, and should I mention her "Little Man" (Napolian) syndrome? Please get her off the political 2:06 stage!
Peter strikes out big time on that comment. I believe her career is over in Canadian politics!
Foreigner are not a substitute for children. Deport
Justin Trudeau froze the bank accounts of people supporting a grassroots political movement that wanted change.
I will vote soon and I will never forget that the Canadian government froze the bank accounts of citizens that disagreed with what they are doing
Justin has been looking good for the last few days as he finalised the handover of the governing of Haida Gwaii back to the Haida and this morning announced a major infrastructure project that will see high speed rail in the corridor where half the country’s population lives. He’s looking more relaxed these days now that the responsibility of running the country is coming to an end. Surprising things have happened since he announced he would resign.
Trump has united most of Canada, becoming the brunt of any anger or discontent some might have had. The cabinet members that vowed to stick out the next few months to help steer the country through the threat of tariffs have become visible in the media, reassuring Canadians that there’s. a talented team working hard on their behalf. Albertans are still whining, but that’s nothing new.
There’s a new Liberal leadership candidate called Mark Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, who seems to be having an effect on the voting intentions of Canadians. Polls are showing the Liberals gaining on the Conservatives who, along with the NDP, have incompetent leaders. The polls also show Carney, now way ahead of Freeland in the leadership race, as the person best capable of dealing with Trump.
Carney is at least as smart as Freeland – they both went to Harvard and Oxford. They used to be friends. It will be interesting to see if their friendship survives the leadership race. They also both grew up in Alberta, which might assuage some in that province. Carney’s even gaining support among francophones in Quebec.
What’s happening is certainly interesting. Although there’s still a lot of uncertainty, I can sense an energy among Canadians I haven’t seen in decades. It’s going to be interesting.
sorry don't agree with this one. If she is so good why is Canada has so much problems now ?a quater of Vancouver is owned by Chinese which leads to the housing crsis. As a Canadian I think she and Trudeau sold the country to China. And the Canadian, definitely she is one of the reasons.
This is way off.
She quit because Trudeau asked her to endorse the new budget, which she really didn't, only to be moved to a different ministry a few days later. She said no and quit her job which in turn costed Trudeau's job. It was the final nail in his coffin.
@peter zeihan what you dont realize is what trump has done basically tells anyone including the ukrainians, that any deal with the usa isnt worth the paper its written on. trade war means both countries will suffer, but canada will just build pipelines to east and west coast and diversify its trade with eu and asia. they can sell their energy to asia and europe at market rates and dont need to give discounts for americans to sell as the middle man.
also canada has a free trade agreement with europe. you are gonna see a shifting of trade by canada to asia and europe, because of what trump has done. that change is gonna happen and nothing trump can do about it. the us is an unreliable trade partner, as the trade deals they make are worthless.
btw i see canada joining the EU rather than joining the USA. europe has people, and canada has land.
and dont kid yourself on a callapse of canada. the canadian dollar in the past was 60 cents to the usd before, and canada is still here. once they shift trade to asia and europe, it will be better for canada in the long run.
and as for us shifting to asia, dont kid yourself. most of those countries are aligning with china because they get a better deal from them and easier access to chinese markets.
where america pulls out of global affairs, china will come in with their check books like in africa, where the americans have left. china is trading with rest of the world where america is isolating itself.
as for population decline in china, well they have a billion people. they can tell their people to have more kids. even if they have only 400 million people of child bearing age, they can tell them to have more kids.
asia is different from america in that when the parents age, the kids just take care of them or move in, and the grand parents take care of the kids.
japan has been in demographic decline and they didnt dissapear.
i am sure china can automate, its not rocket science. they built a better AI with a fraction of the cost to what elon and others are spending. they were even arrogant to say china was 10 years behind america in AI and they showed they werent. and they can make technology at a fraction of the cost in america.
So the so-called smartest person in the Canadian government is thus, then responsible for the crafting the disaster they are now, right? RIGHT? Poor Peter can be such a biased hypocrite…
yeah but she is a Liberal and their only expertise has always been corruption and scandals GALORE
This guys a moron
This Peter guy is a goof! WEF Freelund brilliant? Oh boy is he ever misinformed. Life is tough there Peter, tough enough but it's even tougher when you're stupid.
Peter, Peter, Peter,… You got it WRONG AGAIN HONEY
Lol. He resigned and Conservative party that had aligned themselves with anti vaxxer and Trump is now losing support and might not get a majority or even a minority because of the possibility of the new leader being a former bank of Canada and former Bank of England head boss. Yeah I guess to switch from coming doom to Canada coming doom. Oh Peter are you anywhere and if so why would hire you. 😊😅😂
When I hear Zeihen say "intelligent" I now know he means amoral, ruthless, dishonest
