Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the U.S. has received unprecedented coverage in recent times. Watched by adversaries and friends alike, the trip led to a further strengthening of U.S.-India relations.

The relationship between the world’s largest and the oldest democracy is increasingly becoming a multi-faceted one over the last few years. Closer than ever before, India and U.S. will now cooperate in areas which have remained unexplored so far including jet engines, semiconductors, and space among others.

And this has led to some arguing that the ongoing bonhomie between the two nations is based on an alignment of interests and not on values like commitment to democracy, protection of minority rights, freedom of expression etc.

Watch, as United States Institute of Peace senior advisor Dr. Daniel Markey who focuses on US policy in South Asia speaks to Abhishek Singh about the significance of PM Modi’s state visit, the transition in the U.S.-India relationship over the years, and why the U.S. and India should focus more on shared interests than on values.

  1. India also needs American technology to develop, and America also needs India to balance its strategy to maintain its position as the number 1 superpower. The Chinese market is better, but the communist environment is not simple for so-called imperialist countries….

  2. This is the same Daniel Markey who was complaining about India talking about it's freedom fight rather than helping Britain fight World War 2 😀 😀 😀
There is nothing worthwhile to hear from this dumb guy.

  3. India of being accepted the trick/ offer of the famous neo nazi /dictator US will be used as a pawn for war on china same what they did in Ukraine/Syria /Taiwan. India will become a slave/puppet of his former masters the famous Anglo Saxons group who are the invaders/stealers of trillions dollar natural resources of Indian people

  4. I'm from the US & work with a lot of people from India. We laugh at the same things, kid around with each others. One of my friends from India likes beer, he has to hide it when his family comes to visit. Another one had an arranged marriage which he had the final choice on. In the US you are allowed to have your own values, as long as you aren't infringing on other peoples values it's okay. If you come up to me and say "You should be vegan it's hurting animals" that's fine. You can't come up to me and say "I'm going to kill you if you don't go Vegan". Hope that helps some.

  5. As an American with many Indian colleagues and friends, I just want to say that we love and respect India. I hope that a lasting, strong relationship can be forged between our two nations.

  6. Lol I really have tried to see the US-India in a new and hopeful light but i think we keep hitting bogged down in the details. I suggest we stop this drama about shared values and stick to our shared interests.

  7. Indian core values are bragging and laziness.
Smart Indians tend to run away from India so they can fulfil their potential.
They send home $100 Billion in remittance so their families can live.
But West has helped India a lot- IIT Kanpur, Rourkela Steel Plant, PL 480 Wheat, CANDU Reactor.
US Aid to India from 1946-2012 is second only to Israel.
