Tech billionaire Elon Musk is planning a live online discussion next week with the candidate for chancellor of the far-right Alternative for Germany party, Alice Weidel.

The chat is expected to take place on Musk’s platform X. It is his latest endorsement of the AfD ahead of Germany’s general election on February 23rd. Last weekend, Musk caused outrage when he described the far-right party as the country’s “last spark of hope” in an opinion piece in a German newspaper. Political leaders in Germany have accused him of election interference, considering his close relationship with US President-elect Donald Trump.

40 thoughts on “Why Elon Musk interferes in politics around the world | DW News”
  1. Why is it that everyone else can voice opinions about other countries politics , but if someone from the U.S. does it it's terrible ( other countries political parties even send people to support certain political parties in the U.S.)

  2. Elon Musk does not practise what he preaches. He has accused UK Prime Minister Starmer of interfering in the US Presidential Election for Starmer's preference for the Democratic Party candidate; yet he openly expresses support for AfD Alice Weidel for the coming German Chancellor Election.

  3. 4:41 As German I must disagree with this estimation. It pains me to admit but the AfD has high chances to succeed, like at least 3rd, maybe even 2nd biggest faction of the votes. Simply out of discontent with the conventionell CDU or SPD or Grüne. I too believe Musk will have no greater influence on the poll but even without him it looks bleak

  4. Interference in foreign politics should be banned and their platforms like X should get a lawsuit against them. American interest is to destabilize the global economy so they can buy it cheap with more of their printed money.

  5. It is true that the German government has not righty addressed issues related to immigration, energy policies, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. However, voting for the far-right AfD is not a viable solution. When even a foreign figure like Elon Musk appears to support your domestic interests, it is worth questioning whether you are truly on the right track. Reflect carefully on why he is advocating for the AfD and consider what his underlying interests might be.

  6. We have freedom of speech in America, he's just sharing his opinion. Just like the grooming gangs, etc.., you guys should not make policy decisions based on the opinions of one man.

  7. Media outlets are complicit in the crimes against the German people. They're shitting their pants right now and they should! The populace will wake up and they will not forgive!

  8. Es ist interessant die verdrehten Tatsachen aus links orientierten Darstellungen zu hören und
eine Wohltat zu erkennen das vielen aus deren Reihen nun der Arsch auf Grundeis geht.

  9. Hey everyone, just a heads-up that Elon Musk criticized the German government for inaction way back in 2023, long before he got into politics.

No greedy politician would dare to propose cutting government budgets by 80% like he did, which has even put him at risk of threats.

This shows his determination to change the world, and we shouldn't overlook his call for a fair political system just because of his status.

Recently, many media outlets have spread rumors to tarnish Musk's image, trying to distract from human rights and free speech issues. We should resist political smear campaigns and rally in support of Musk!

Also, AFD's plan to scrap environmental policies isn't suitable for governance, as data shows these policies create new industries and job opportunities.

Lastly, Putin mentioned that America's arrogance could lead to a collapse similar to the old Soviet Union, and he's praying for it. We must urge Musk not to let Trump divide the U.S. and Europe; unity is essential.

  10. people go to USA to help kamala harris in the election so trump wouldnt win. and Elon is just having a conversation with a woman that being cencored in her own country. and people hate Elon for it.

  11. So its perfectly ok when Bill gates sends money to the lefties but when Elon just wants to have a talk its election interference? Cry a bit more😂

  12. As a Chinese person, I can’t help but feel that for safety reasons, Musk might lean towards China after shaking things up in the U.S. His mother’s commercials are everywhere here, and we basically view Tesla as a Chinese car company since almost all of its components are made in China.

Musk is very skilled at using the language of democratic nations to stir emotions, emphasizing the need for democracy and the victory of good over evil. But for Chinese people, who have seen enough of authoritarian leaders, many of us feel Musk actually has a lot in common with the way things are done in China.

That said, I still hope the U.S. does well—it’s a country admired by most educated Chinese people, even though some recent actions have left us a bit puzzled.
