North Carolina’s Research Triangle – the area between Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham – has become one of the country’s fastest growing tech hubs largely thanks to its access to talent from some of the top universities in the country (Duke, North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State) and low cost of living. The state’s pro-business environment and low taxes have attracted tech giants like Meta, Apple and Amazon investing billions in the area. In 2024, the state was ranked second on CNBC’s America’s Top States For Business list.

Why Everyone Is Flocking To North Carolina’s Tech Hub

This area USED TO BE a great place to live. It's overcrowded now. The amount of housing and roads being built over the course of 25 years, but especially the last 10 years, is insane. All I see are logging trucks taking huge trees down the highway as they clear more and more land. The traffic is AWFUL. It's difficult to get to and from work. Interstate 40 even during mid-day is so busy you can't even switch lanes. Every day there are accidents on 40. It's super expensive to live here now. The natives have to move completely AWAY from the area because they can't afford to live where they grew up. To me that is just sad. They wind up selling their land to developers and moving into someplace newer but much smaller with less land. You can never get that back once you've sold it. They told everyone it was so great here and everyone should come here, so everyone came. It's crowded, expensive, there's lots of traffic, there is NO public transportation to speak of. The entire culture of the area has changed because there are more newcomers than natives. Basically it's pretty much ruined. If you want to move from New York right back to "New York" again, then sure, come here. And the summers here are HOT. You can't go outside in July and August because it's so HOT and humid. Be prepared for that. And where does the development stop? When every single scrap of land is built on and the roads are so overcrowded that nothing can be done? Why do people want this? I know why the government wants it – they get the tax revenue from it. But for everyone else it's not good. At a city council meeting people tried to speak against a proposed shopping center they were going to develop on open land. 90% of the people were against it. They let people speak but when it was over they just did what they wanted anyway and changed the zoning from rural residential to commercial and they built on it. Now traffic is a nightmare.
I’ll take ”Because California is a filthy, liberal cesspool for $1000 Alex”.
It's impossible for young adults to buy a house nowadays.
They need public transportation. Trains, bus rapid transit or light rail
What the heck is this road 4:00
“Chapel Hill is considered a suburb of Durham?”
Not really, at least not in the real world. The whole RDU area used to be considered one urban area but the Census Bureau decided to split Raleigh and Durham into two areas. But really it’s not a suburb of either, or it’s a suburb of both
NC was the first confederate state to stop trying to re-fight the Civil War and to join the modern US economy.
What about 2025? Is this info still valid?
You know Charlotte has more ppl than san fransisco so dont act like Charlotte is small
Don't forget about us in Charlotte 🙂
Ask anyone who is from Durham or Chapel Hill and NO ONE will say “Chapel Hill is considered a suburb of Durham.” What a lazy lazy nonsensical take. UNC and UNC hospitals are a major employer in Orange County, employing thousands of people who live in Durham. WTF are you talking about?
Already planning my move for 2026. Was considering Huntsville but this appeals more

Low taxes low taxes….oh did i mention the taxes are low
Yikes, destroy other locations just to come to yours. Good luck NC.
They are pushing a false narrative. Why is the question??? NC the hottest cities ??? Definitely not but you will see when u get here. Minimum wage is still 7.25 in North Carolina. This is total bs…. Ok if ur a multi billion dollar company maybe. But the salaries they pay are not competitive. It is not easy to find jobs.
Moved her 10 years ago, the republican legislature is dragging this state backwards. I’m out.
Deuteronomy 32:35
😅😮
Loved living in Raleigh years ago. Great area with tons of stuff to do.
California dreaming…now it means dreaming of leaving. Ridiculous taxes, high gas prices, million dollar shacks.
